My Watches and I: Kam Daswani, Founder of Dram Good Stuff

Introduction

It's exceedingly rare to meet a watch collector who does not have a thing or two other than watches that he/she too savours in life. After all, the appreciation of horology, or the art of watchmaking, is really just a manifestation of a sense for beauty. And beauty, my friend, is ubiquitous. It is that unexpected stroke of a capturing painting. It is the silhouette of a well thought-out piece of furniture. And for the interview subject of our third episode of My Watches and I (you can check out the first two episodes here and here), beauty certainly can be found in the aftertaste of a brilliant scotch.

Recently, I got to spend a morning talking watches with Kam Daswani, a personal friend and founder of whisky business Dram Good Stuff (you can find out more about it here), who happens to own some pretty remarkable - or should I say, pretty Dram Good - timepieces. Relaxed and friendly as he has always been, Kam walked me through his watch collection in detail, and explained his personal stories with them. And of course, I, being a complete whisky novice, seized the chance to pick Kam's brain and learned a thing or two about his trade (now I know what a bourbon is).

And this, is your third episode of My Watches and I. Let's get to it.

My Watches and I: Ed Scheckler, An Engineering PhD Turned Fun-Loving Watch Aficionado (Who's Been Bitten Particularly Hard by the F.P. Journe Bug)

Introduction

This is a really, really fun one to write about. It's quite long, but it's absolutely worth the effort.

After launching our inaugural "My Watches and I" episode, I've been asked more than once about the whereabout of a second episode (so, I hope that means the decision to start this column is a welcomed one). Naturally I looked to watch lovers I'm personally close to - who are also kind enough to let me play around with their prized possessions - in search of my next interview subject. Luckily, during my short-but-eventful stint as a watch blogger, I've had the pleasure to meet and become more than acquainted with a number of them. Amongst them is Mr. Ed Scheckler (you can follow his Instagram here; just go and hit the follow button, you won't regret it), who got bitten hard by this haute horlogerie bug when he moved to Hong Kong some 8 years ago, citing the abundance of watch-related exposure the city has to offer.

Since then, watches have become more or less a voluntary addiction for him, resulting in a 20-something-strong watch collection spanning from the most revered independent pieces to the funkiest quartz numbers one can imagine. We took the chance to catch up with him and had a conversation on all things watches. And this, is Ed Scheckler's watch story. Paired with very nice pictures taken by our own Mario Cheung. Let's get right down to it.

Introduction

Ever since the inception of Lengbeau, we've made it clear that we want to become a blog that does so much more than just delivering product information and copy-pasting press releases. We believe in the notion that what makes horology truly an interesting subject to write about, are really, the people and stories behind it. The watchmakers. The human beings doing amazing things in their watches of choice. The craftsmanship. The connections between the watch community and the world at large waiting to be uncovered, and narrated.

And that's when we thought: why don't we create a column and invite watch collectors of all sorts to come over and share with us their personal experience and stories? Heck, we can even take a picture or two of their prized possessions so we can share all of these with our readers too. So we thought, and so we did. Today, we bring you our inaugural "My Watches and I" instalment with Alex Lau, a successful wealth planner cum watch collector who happens to have a really fine taste especially when it comes to collecting independent timepieces, certainly not the least of which a unique Laurent Ferrier he has help ed design. Our founder Jason Mai has recently caught up with him and below is their conversation and of course, there will be pictures. Read on and enjoy Alex's unique watch collecting journey.

Some mornings are just better than others. They just are. This morning is one such morning.

After wrapping up a massively successful watch auction in Geneve and saw some of the most valuable vintage timepieces change hands not long ago, renowned auction house Phillips has no plan to slow down and comes back with their second Hong Kong-based watch auction aptly named "Hong Kong Watch Auction: Two", to be held in Mandarin Oriental, Central, Hong Kong on 31st May. When Phillips is involved, you can bet there will be no shortage of absolutely mega timepieces to go under the hammer and here in Lengbeau we are so glad that notion is as valid as ever. While Phillips is doing what it does best curating amazing timepieces, Lengbeau does what it does best too: getting up close and personal with these "one day, maybe" watches for our readers. Ready? Read on to find out our top topics of the auction and enjoy our high definition pictures.

Analysis: Twelve Legendary Watch Families that Defined Modern Horology (and What Makes Them Awesome)(Part 1)

5/16/2016

When Lengbeau was first founded some eight months ago, there was a specific feature we were particularly excited to do: to introduce to our readers what we believe are the twelve most iconic, important mechanical watch models from twelve different watch manufacturers, and hopefully in the process of doing so, quickly familiarise you with the quintessential timepieces and watch brands that you cannot afford to not know.

Started off as an idea in which we'd wish to produce a full-length coverage of each of the twelve pieces (in fact, we did manage to do one, for the Rolex Submariner), we quickly realised this might not be the most efficient way to go about this. As a result, we are coming back with this very feature to introduce all these legendary watches to you in two parts, so you could have a quick, good sense of what they are and what make them great. And at the end of this feature, you should be able to at least name ONE signature watch from the likes of Rolex, Audemars Piguet or Heuer.

Ready? Let's meet the legends.

As the glamourous "Watches & Wonders 2015" exhibition drew to a complete close, it's timely to look back on some of the brand new releases from the dozen of manufacturers that took part in this horology extravaganza. We've got to meet with 2 new Panerais that are finally finding their way to the radar of collectors favoring smaller dimensions. We've seen the super complicated, magnificent reference 57260 from Vacheron Constantin (and it's a huge pity that no photos were allowed to be taken of it). And how can we forget the lovely A.Lange 1815 Chronograph that takes our breathe away with its clean palette? No. We can't.

As much as we've wanted to cover every single new watches coming out of the event, it's simply impossible. As a result, we've decided to find the single most interesting, wearable, refreshing product line that is actually AFFORDABLE to introduce to our readers. One particular collection from the renowned watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre had rightfully called for my complete attention when I first laid my sight on it. It's the kind of watch that checks all the right boxes. Balanced watch profile. Innovative razor-shaped hands. Finely grained dial. There are so nanny clever features that came together in this 39.7mm watch that, for a second, I lost focus (but remained fixated on this sheer beauty - it has to be magic/ love). And then when I saw its second hand ticked, just like a run-of-the-mill quartz watch, I KNEW this is it. This is the watch Lengbeau has to cover. The plot twist here is: it's not quartz.

Ladies and gentlemen, Lengbeau gives you The Jaeger-LeCoultre Geophysic "True Second".
