Legend 12 Series #1: The Rolex Submariner

Rolex Submariners from various decades. And that Panerai right there? Nope, it's not placed amongst the Subs by mistake. Lengbeau will explain in the near future.
(中文版本按此)

As commented earlier in our introduction,  good watches are abundant, LEGENDARY watches are, however, not something that could be churned out as frequently. The combination of these two factors could create confusions for people who are relatively new to the world of watches, especially when deciding which watch is more worthy of one's money. As such, Lengbeau has felt the obligation to serve our wider audiences by handpicking a dozen of, in our view, the most iconic and important watch bloodlines/ families. And for the sake of diversity, we've on purpose chosen only one family of watches from each of the 12 manufacturers, so that by the time you've finished reading the entire series, you'd be familiar with a broad plate of quintessential (not necessarily the most expensive) watch faces in the business.

Teaser [Legend 12 Series]: The (Super Odd) Rolex Deepsea You Never Knew Existed | 傳奇12系列預告:勞力士深潛型(潛到無影)

Rolex Deepsea Special. The chosen timing instrument in a trip to the deepest known part of the ocean in 1960.
We all know Rolex is famous for producing watches of supreme quality. That attribute, when applied to a diver model, would translate into its ability to withstand unforgiving water pressure when worn hundreds of meters undersea.

What most don't realize is that Rolex actually managed to come up with a watch that brings diver engineering to the absolutely new height (or depth, really), so much so that it has to turn to some apparently oddball design to get the job done. When Jacque Piccard of Switzerland and Don Walsh from America, both legendary oceanographers, decided to for the first time in the history of mankind, explore the deepest known part of the ocean of Planet Earth in 1960, they turned to Rolex for a timepiece that could handle the hardship. This is no ordinary feat. We are talking about reaching for the Challenger Deep - some 10,900m in depth - at the southern tip of the Mariana Trench in Pacific Ocean. To put things into perspective, Mount Everest is only 8,848m tall. Needless to say, Rolex engineers at Geneve were given a tough nut to crack.

It is truly an exciting time of the year to be in Hong Kong if you happen to be a watch enthusiast.

For the third time, Hong Kong is the host to the haute holorgerie (high horology) exhibition Watches & Wonders, which is to take place in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 30 September to 3 October. A strong lineup of 12 renowned watchmakers (mostly under the Richemond Group) would be flexing their engineering muscles to showcase their best products to the keen eyes of the visitors.

Amongst the exhibitors stands one lone watchmaker from Saxony, Germany: A. Lange & Söhne ("A.Lange"). For readers new to this brand, Lengbeau will cover its history in our Legend 12 series (spoilerrr!). Today we will be focusing on a specific brand new model to be released by the German company in this year's Watches & Wonder: The 1815 Chronograph.

What you see above is a 1965 Rolex print ad on its Submariner. 50 years later, Lengbeau found its punchlines remained 100% relevant.

Looking at the picture above, you see a horde of watches (picture blurred on purpose - doing our best to create some low-cost suspense here). You know some of them, you SORT OF recognize a few others, and you're scratching you head over the rest...

The world of horology is in no shortage of decent watches. But once in a while (more likely a century than a decade) we get to witness the birth of THE definitive watches, the kinds that are destined for timeless greatness, the kinds whose wearers would go on and change the world, the kinds that DEFINE a brand/ a period of history. They are the absolute legends in the business and you simply cannot not know them.

Here in Lengbeau we have handpicked 12 examples - from 12 watchmakers - of these cornerstone models in the history of fine horology. We will produce in-depth coverage on every single one of them, the brands behind and more importantly, their fascinating stories.

Sit back and get ready for a ride. Our "Legend 12" series is coming at you soon.
